An international dentist's journey through networking: A letter of appreciation to dental hygienists

Sept. 10, 2024
As an international dentist, Andreina Sucre has been grateful for the support she's found at dental hygiene conferences. Networking in dentistry is extremely important.

Like many professions, dentistry demands continuous learning and adaptation. While technical skills and expertise are critical, I've come to realize that a strong network of supportive colleagues and inspiration from attending conferences can truly elevate someone’s professional journey.

Why a supportive network matters

Dentistry is incredibly complex. Having colleagues to exchange ideas with, share best practices, and navigate challenges is invaluable. Mentorship and guidance from experienced dental professionals can benefit young professionals by providing valuable career insights and skill development. In a physically and emotionally demanding profession, a supportive network provides a safe space to share frustrations, celebrate successes, and connect with others who understand our unique challenges.

Networking in the dental community opens doors to professional development opportunities. Colleagues can inform you about CE courses, conferences, and job openings that you may not notice otherwise. It truly takes a village to thrive in this field, and a strong network ensures you have a support system to navigate the complexities of a dental career.

Conferences: Igniting (my) passion

Attending dental conferences has been transformative for me professionally and personally. As an introvert who initially knew very few dental hygienists, I was apprehensive about stepping into these large gatherings. But I've been consistently amazed by the warmth and support of the dental community. Every interaction and conversation have reinforced a sense of belonging and left me feeling like I'm making a positive contribution.

These events are so much more than opportunities to learn about the latest technologies and trends. They’re incredible networking hubs that foster connections with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Sharing experiences, exchanging ideas, and building collaborations are the true gems of conferences.

While there might not be concrete research directly measuring the impact of conferences on a dental pro’s passion, it's undeniable that the positive energy, inspiration, and sense of community profoundly impact our professional growth and development. The research that highlights the positive influence of professional development on health-care professionals definitely matches my own experience.

Embracing diversity and gratitude

The growing number of international dentists practicing in the US has enriched the dental landscape. It's exciting to witness the diverse perspectives and expertise we bring. As one of the few who’s breaking the glass ceiling for international dentists by speaking at dental conferences, I'm proud to be part of this movement.

Conferences such as RDH Under One Roof have offered me a unique opportunity to celebrate this diversity and cultivate a sense of global community in our profession. I hope more foreign-trained dentists will be motivated and able to attend dental and dental hygienist conferences, further enriching our field and sharing their unique insights.

I've been incredibly fortunate to attend these conferences and connect with dental professionals from all corners of the US. It’s truly humbling to see the dedication and knowledge that dental hygienists bring to their work. At the end of each RDH UOR I’ve attended, I've left feeling inspired and in awe of the collective commitment to patient care that unites us all, no matter our background.

One last thing from my personal experience

Building a strong network and attending conferences have been pivotal in my dental career. These experiences have given me the knowledge, inspiration, and connections to overcome challenges and foster a deep appreciation for the successes in this profession. I'm incredibly thankful for the warm welcome I've received from the dental hygienist community, and I hope this sense of inclusivity continues to embrace all international dentists. Ultimately, our shared passion for providing exceptional patient care is what binds us together.

Thank you!
