Keynote speakers — The “goldies,” Anne Guignon and Dianne Glasscoe Watterson, have presented seminars at every RDH Under One Roof conference since, well, the beginning (Denver, 2001). All of the RDH updates about “UOR” thus far have focused on the general sessions presented by newcomers to the conference. But we thought it would be nice to mention what these UOR veterans are doing this year. Watterson, who is the author of the “Staff Rx” column in RDH, will present on “Communication tools for Dental Professionals” at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5. Guignon, the author of the “Comfort Zone” column, is presenting a course titled, “Soft Drink Junkies — Teeth, Bones, and Body” at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7. For more information about other general session speakers, as well as workshops, visit www.rdhunderoneroof.com.

Receptions — Each day of RDH Under One Roof concludes with a reception (no additional cost, since they are a part of the overall tuition). The receptions are a relaxing way to unwind after a day of seminars, and to meet dental hygienists from all over the country. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages are served. The first two receptions are located in the exhibit hall, and are hosted by Brasseler USA (6:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 5) and Sunstar Americas (4:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 6). The latter includes a brief awards ceremony for the recipients of the Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction. The exhibitors will be at both receptions in force, so, if you missed opportunities at other times, you can catch up during the receptions. The final reception, hosted by Discus Dental at 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 7, is the only reception hosted off site. The Atlantic Dance hall (see photo below), a short walk to the nearby Boardwalk, encourages dancing to a variety of musical styles.

Tip of the month — Mark Hartley, the editor of RDH magazine, has also attended every RDH Under One Roof along with Anne Guignon and Dianne Glasscoe Watterson (see above). While he acknowledges the benefits of UOR seminars and exhibits, he is reluctant to minimize the benefits of networking — the third tier of UOR marketing. “Obviously, there are some colleagues who travel together, and some groups start banding together after several meetings. But it always amazes me to see the friendships that form at UOR. Make the effort to meet a dental colleague from another part of the country. You won’t regret it. These friendships often appear destined to last a lifetime.”
