Dear RDH:
In general, I find RDH articles positive and informative. Therefore, I was very surprised that you included "The Ease of a Squirt" in the January 2000 issue.
The article reflected a generally negative, if not derogatory, tone toward dentists, reeked of generalizations, and some of the grammar was not polished, excuse the pun. Some of the statements made are just not true. For example, I recently attended a seminar taught by a periodontist who covered the chemotherapeutic agents: Atridox, PerioChip, and the new technology of Periostat as a treatment for site-specific, chronic adult periodontitis.
Although I do wholeheartedly agree with Ms. Sidder that we need to assert ourselves as periodontal specialists, I do not think it is necessary to put down periodontists in the process. With such an attitude like this, it is a wonder that there are not more dentists who are unsupportive of our profession.
I think we need to practice some diplomacy if we would demand respect in return.
