Oct. 2, 2024
Each month, the RDH Clinical Recognition Program, sponsored by Water Pik, Inc., features a dental hygiene clinician who goes the extra mile in their job to change their patients’ lives, influence their patients’ health, and make a daily difference. This month we honor Chrissy Harlow, BSDH, RDH, an oral health champion who is transforming lives.

Chrissy Harlow, BSDH, RDH: Oral health champion

Chrissy Harlow describes herself as an "oral health champion who transforms lives." She does this through education, compassion, encouragement, innovation, and breaking down barriers. Her impact extends beyond the walls of her practice, fostering improved overall well-being and a newfound sense of patient empowerment.

She says: "From individuals with limited to no dental knowledge to those facing anxieties and fears, I patiently guide them one-on-one, empowering each of my patients to understand and learn how to implement proper dental hygiene practices. It's not just about talking to patients; I equip them with the tools-from mastering flossing to incorporating probiotics-and the confidence to take control of their oral health. This results in remarkable transformations. Patients who once dreaded the dentist now proudly display healthy smiles."

Chrissy's patient-centered approach creates a safe and nurturing environment-so much so that some patients followed her when she switched dental offices. Her charting, patient care, and detail to office efficiency leave a positive impression on both dentists and coworkers. Chrissy has shared her approaches and techniques with other hygienists with the goal of making patients confident in their smiles and feeling safe to come back for future visits.

Reaching beyond the operatory

Chrissy's commitment to oral health extends beyond the walls of her practice. She supports oral health equity and volunteers her time and expertise to serve underprivileged communities. These outreach opportunities empower individuals who may have previously lacked access to proper dental care with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve and maintain optimal oral health and well-being. This ultimately leads to a healthier and more confident community.

Lifelong learning

With over two decades of experience, Chrissy's passion for dental hygiene remains as vibrant as ever. Although initially drawn to the clinical side of dental hygiene, she discovered her gift for educating during the COVID-19 pandemic. While working at a new practice, patients and coworkers frequently mistook Chrissy for an educator, impressed by her comprehensive knowledge and engaging way of presenting dental facts. This unexpected recognition sparked a desire to share her expertise and empower the next generation of dental professionals.

Fueled by this newfound purpose, Chrissy embarked on a challenging yet rewarding journey. While maintaining a demanding full-time clinical schedule, she enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in dental hygiene, juggling her studies and clinical responsibilities. Her unwavering dedication to self-improvement and growth culminated in her graduation in June 2023.

Today, Chrissy seamlessly blends her clinical expertise with her passion for education. She continues to thrive in her clinical work while dedicating one day a week to educating students at a local college.

On this, she says: "By nurturing future generations of dental hygienists, my impact extends far beyond my individual practice, contributing to a healthier and more informed community. My story exemplifies the transformative power of lifelong learning, and the profound impact one can have by embracing new challenges and sharing knowledge with others."

Chrissy's tips for new dental hygiene graduates

Chrissy recommends that new hygiene graduates find a mentor to help navigate the stressful, early days of clinical practice. She believes it is helpful to have someone to act as a soundboard and make sure new grads feel secure in their position. She also advises hygienists to keep an open mind and always be learning.

Being a lifelong learner helps keep you excited, motivated, and aware of the newest innovations in the field. CE training, YouTube and TikTok videos on patient care, hygiene conferences, and networking at these events will not only help you stay on the pulse of the dental industry but also make you more valuable as an employee.

Chrissy states: "This enthusiasm is contagious. Your dedication to patient education will inspire and empower other dental hygienists and dentists, ultimately leading to improved care for countless patients and a better experience for everyone."
