The power of inclusion: Reflections from RDH Under One Roof 2024

Sept. 25, 2024
This RDH felt the power of inclusion and advancement at this year's RDH Under One Roof. She knows the profession is strong moving into the future.

As I stood in the main conference hall at RDH Under One Roof (UOR) 2024 looking at the sea of faces—some familiar and others new—I felt a profound sense of belonging. This annual gathering of dental hygienists is more than just a professional event; it’s a celebration of our shared commitment to improving oral health, a testament to the strides we’ve made, and a beacon for the future.

The theme, “Inspiring Views, Inspiring Minds,” resonated with me because it reflects our collective journey toward inclusivity and innovation in dental hygiene. And of course, the beautiful Gaylord Resort enhanced the awe I felt during my days spent in Denver.

Inclusion is not just a trend

Inclusion is a word that often gets tossed around in conversations along with diversity, but for me it carries a much deeper, more powerful meaning. It’s not about belonging for the sake of fitting in, it’s about creating spaces where everyone’s voice is heard and each individual feels valued for their unique contributions. At RDH UOR 2024, this concept of inclusion was palpable, woven into the fabric of every session, conversation, and interaction.

The sense of belonging I experienced at RDH UOR wasn’t just about being part of a group of like-minded professionals. It was about being part of a movement toward a more inclusive and equitable future in dental hygiene. As I engaged with my peers, sharing stories, exchanging ideas, and discussing the challenges we all face in our profession, I was reminded of the importance of inclusion in our work.

Inclusion doesn’t simply ensure that everyone has a seat at the table; it makes sure that the unique voices at that table are heard and respected. It recognizes that our differences—whether they be in our backgrounds, experiences, or perspectives—make us stronger as a collective. This was evident in the diverse range of topics covered at RDH UOR, from the latest advancements in oral health technology to discussions on mental health and well-being in the workplace. Each session put a spotlight on the importance of embracing and fostering an inclusive environment where all dental hygienists can thrive.

Embrace diversity for advancement

The theme perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the event. It reminded me that inclusion is not just a goal to be achieved but an ongoing process of growth and learning. Dental hygienists are constantly evolving and seeking new ways to improve patient care, expand our knowledge, and contribute to the advancement of our profession. But this evolution is only possible when we embrace the diverse perspectives that each of us possesses.

Amanda Hill's kick-off mega session set the tone for an inspiring conference by emphasizing that each course offered unique insights, with the most important takeaway being the value of continuous learning and growth. I learned that there’s space for each of us in the dental hygiene community. This realization reinforced the power of a collective responsibility and the idea that our varied experiences and perspectives only strengthen our journey.

When we approach problems from multiple angles, considering the experiences and insights of others, we’re more likely to find innovative solutions that benefit our profession and patients. This approach not only enhances our professional practice but strengthens our sense of community.

One of the most powerful moments for me at RDH UOR 2024 was during breaks and discussing with different hygienists about how over the years, this event has become a beacon for many of us. We talked about the need to consider cultural differences and create a welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable seeking care.

The power of RDH UOR

As a woman of color, this feeling has been consistent and refreshing at RDH UOR. I’m so proud of how much our profession has grown in its understanding of the importance of inclusion and I applaud so many for being part of the journey. Those conversations reminded me of the work we do every day to bridge gaps and build connections—whether it’s between dental hygiene students and the profession, as I do in my role at Aspen Dental, or between practitioners and patients.

I left RDH UOR 2024 feeling a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to the work we do. The power of inclusion serves as a reminder that our strength as a profession lies in our diversity, in our willingness to learn from one another, and in our commitment to creating a more inclusive future for all.

Inclusion is not just a buzzword or a checkbox on a list; it’s the foundation upon which we can build a stronger, more resilient dental hygiene community. It’s about ensuring that every dental hygienist feels valued and empowered to contribute to the future of our profession. As we move forward, let’s carry the spirit of RDH UOR 2024 with us, continuing to inspire and be inspired by the views and minds of those around us. When we embrace inclusion, we’re not just building a profession, we’re building a community.
