A new approach to fluoride varnish

June 1, 2024
Fluoride varnishes are widely used, but result in a sticky mouth-feel for patients. Profisil eliminates that unpleasant feeling while keeping all of the benefits.

In the world of dental hygiene, the search for effective treatments that are both patient-friendly and clinically sound is never-ending. This is especially true when selecting the correct fluoride varnish application. When I came across Profisil, I was pleasantly surprised. It was goodbye to the sticky, clumpy woes of traditional fluoride varnishes and hello to a smoother, silkier solution that prioritizes patient comfort and efficacy.

Fluoride sets the standard

Fluoride varnishes have become the standard modality for fluoride application. We learned it was more effective for our patients than the foam or gels we once used in the large Styrofoam trays. Most often fluoride varnish is indicated for dentinal hypersensitivity. However, we often explore its potential for off-label purposes, such as caries management. With a formulation of 5% sodium fluoride, Profisil provides long-lasting protection for about three to six months, which is perfect for our regular recall patients.

Profisil improves upon the standard

A key feature of Profisil is that it’s rosin free. Instead, it uses a biocompatible substance called dimethicone gel. This provides a slick, smooth finish that glides effortlessly onto the teeth. It easily migrates around the tooth, providing excellent coverage. One feature of fluoride varnishes I disliked was how my teeth would stick together when biting down and the white filmy strings that would peel off my teeth and lips. Honestly, these things made me not want to apply it at all and apologize to my patients that they wouldn’t get to leave the office with a clean-feeling mouth. Now with Profisil, patients won’t experience this post-application mess, because there isn’t any rosin in the formulation.

Just like with prophy paste, my patients love having flavor options. Profisil has three different flavors to choose from, which are very mild: mint, berry, and unflavored. My patients and I both like the unflavored one. It’s not overpowering, nor medicinal. I find it refreshing to have a variety of flavors that will meet even my pickiest patient’s desires.

The other feature of Profisil that’s important to consider is the absence of certain allergens. When patients ask you if there is gluten in the varnish, you can confidently say no. It also does not contain any peanuts, tree nuts, soy, or dairy, making it a safe choice for many.

Patients may experience a slight zing or even a burning sensation with some fluoride products, commonly due to ethyl alcohol. Profisil doesn’t have this compound, so it makes it my go-to option for my patients with recession. The little exposed dentinal tubules will get desensitization and increased fluoride protection without the stinging side effects.

Using Profisil is simple. After opening the single unit dose package, mix the fluoride solution that’s in the small well at the end to make one homogenous fluid. When applying, there’s no need to dry teeth beforehand—simply apply in a sweeping motion using the included micro brush. Patients then go about their day without brushing or flossing until the next day. Now, if you are seeing your patient right before their lunch or at the end of the day when they are on their way home to have dinner, please let them know they can eat, but will need to avoid hot beverages, crunchy foods, or any liquids with alcohol for about four hours after application. Depending on your patient’s oral health needs, you can apply this frequently, with reapplication recommended every three to six months.

Profisil is unlike any other fluoride varnish—it has been a game-changer for me and my patients. With its smooth application, allergen-free formula, and long-lasting benefits, it makes it an easy yes for me, and I encourage every dental practitioner to give it a try. Your patients will thank you for having this available, knowing you are giving them the very best care.
